Using Screens as a Strategic Communication Channel

I explore why workplace screens are everywhere, yet often underused as a deliberate communication channel. The discussion looks at how understanding the eye and mind can help organisations create more effective screen-based content.

Key Takeaways

  • Screens are common in professional environments, but their role as a communication channel is still relatively immature.
  • Many organisations use screens with good intentions, but content often falls short without a clear strategy.
  • Understanding how people visually and cognitively respond to screens can improve the effectiveness of workplace communications.

Screens are everywhere, aren't they? Like, I think this is what's one of the interesting things for me is that we instinctively know. Like, I haven't been into a building that hasn't got screens on a wall. Like, in my whole professional career, I've never been in a building where there aren't screens all around. So we instinctively feel the need to put them up. But really, most of us, especially the communications professionals, have never really used it as a channel. I think that probably the more sophisticated use of it historically has been for, like, advertising networks and very commercial use cases. But screens as a communication channel is not as mature as it is for, you know, for email or for, you know, messaging and things like that. And we sort of, I think because we use those mediums more in our day-to-day lives, we kind of understand the etiquette and the rules of that. But when it comes to screens, and what we see mostly with our customers is people are trying, and it's great, but often it's kind of falling short. And I think if we just use this, you know, period of time, this short period of time we've got today, just to go into some of the core principles and basics of, like, how the eye and the mind work and how we respond to this stuff, then it will help people be a bit more deliberate in how we use screens. And, you know, so that's kind of, it's just really grounding it in something a little bit more strategic. Yeah, and I think it starts with the brain and the eye, really.
