Personalising Digital Signage for Safer Workplaces
I explore why people respond more strongly to messages that feel familiar, relevant and rooted in their own environment. Using a workplace safety example, I discuss how personalised digital signage can make communications more memorable and more likely to prompt action.
Key Takeaways
- Digital signage allows content to be localised in ways print cannot easily achieve.
- Using real people, places and personal connections makes messages more relatable and emotionally impactful.
- Personalised safety messaging can help employees reflect on their actions and remember why safe behaviour matters.

Why do people respond positively to people like themselves? One of the main issues with print is that you had to pick one message and one image, print it out and send it everywhere. One of the benefits of having digital signs is that you can localise your screen content. If you have pictures of employees in their actual environment in which the screen is in, they are more likely to relate to that image and therefore take on the action. A fantastic example of this was when I was on a site visit in South Carolina. I saw pictures of people's children, dogs, beloved trucks, and other things on a wall saying why we work safely. They were real family members that would be highly impacted by an accident at work and caused everyone to take stock and think about what they were doing. The more personalised it is to its environment, the more relatable it is for the people, and therefore the more memorable it is and more likely that someone will take action.
