Digital Signage Shifts Towards Employee Comms

I reflect on three themes from the Digital Signage Summit in Munich, including the move from retail and advertising screens towards employee-facing communication. I also explore why software, AI and automation are becoming central to making screens more useful for deskless and frontline teams.

Key Takeaways

  • Employee-facing screens are becoming the fastest-growing category in digital signage, particularly for deskless and frontline workers.
  • The industry is shifting from a hardware-led mindset towards software that supports richer content and stronger automation.
  • Effective digital signage should rely more on AI and automation, reducing the need for customers to manually upload and manage content.

In May, I attended the Digital Signage Summit in Munich. Reflecting on the event, I think three key themes came across to me. Firstly, the dominant category in digital signage is shifting away from retail, QSR, and advertising, commercial screens that sell. The fastest growing category in digital signage is employee-facing screens, screens that communicate, especially to those deskless and frontline workers that I've spoken about over the years. The second shift that I noticed is that the industry is finally moving away from being hardware-dominated and thinking more about software. Software matters more when employees are looking at the screen because they need so much more content and so much more automation in order for that screen to be a source of truth. And on the third point, even though software is now becoming more dominant in our industry, software and the CMS specifically shouldn't be the main character. We should be leading more on AI, more on automation, and having our customers log in and upload content less, not more. For screens to be truly effective, they need to be automated. It means our software might not get used and configured as much, but it will be the pipe that flows information out and actually make real impact in the business that it's serving.
