Digital Signage Enters the AI Era

I explore how digital signage has shifted from a hardware-first industry rooted in audio-visual technology to one increasingly led by software. As AI chips become more relevant, the future depends on a stronger balance between hardware innovation and software capability.

Key Takeaways

  • Digital signage has evolved from its audio-visual roots, where hardware traditionally led and software played a secondary role.
  • More robust, affordable and commoditised hardware has allowed software to become a more prominent driver of value.
  • The rise of AI creates new opportunities for hardware innovation, particularly through AI chips, but success will rely on closer integration with software.

The digital signage industry has evolved hugely since the 1990s. It's really born out of the audio-visual industry, so fundamentally has been hardware first, software second. That evolution has changed over the last decade, 15 years, where software has become more prominent within the industry. The hardware has become more robust, more affordable, and to some degree more commoditized, and the software is now taking the lead. This is common in other industries such as video conferencing, for example. So as software begins to take the lead, it doesn't mean that there isn't room for hardware innovation, but the two are going to need to come together. There's still plenty of room for hardware innovation, especially as we start to take AI chips on board. But now is the time for a more equal marriage between software and hardware as we both grapple with the era of AI and respond to that.
